In the early 90s,
the Air Travel and Tourism sector was just immerging in Sierra Leone, after the
establishment of the National Tourist Board in 1990, the sector was, however,
challenged with capacity for its employees. There were no centres/institutions
in the Country to trained people to serve in the middle level of administration
in the travel and tourism sector. Against this backdrop, emerged the College of
Travel and Tourism Studies on the 10th October 1999 to primarily trained people
to fill in the said administrative gap.
There is a
reciprocal relationship between transport, tourism and socio-economic
development on one hand and the need for professional competence in the
management of transport, tourism and other socio-economic activities on the
other.
With this view,
the College of Travel and Tourism Studies (C.T.T.S.) also seeks to create an
awareness and appreciation of this reciprocal relationship and build upon the
expertise and experience of the Transport and Tourism industries, so that the
people of Sierra Leone and the sub-region will fully realise the benefits
through training and Continuous Professional programmes.
Due to the development of its courses and the vast production of
high-class services, the college gained recognition from the Ministry of
Education, Science and Technology in May 2003 as the first institution in
Sierra Leone for Travel, Aviation and Tourism courses. In 2011, the college was
accredited by the Tertiary Education Commission (T.E.C.), making it easy for
the college to expand its courses of study. The college is
also offering
courses for the National Council for Technical, Vocational and Other Awards
(N.C.T.V.A.), which offers the opportunity for students to write the Ordinary
National Diploma (OND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) exams. At the College
of Travel and Tourism Studies, we ensure the provision of both nationally and internationally recognized high-quality training in our areas of study, thus enabling graduates to focus on the improvement of their careers in technical activities.
The College of
Travel and Tourism Studies has a strong relationship with the International Air
Transport Association (IATA).
